A solution to shipping batteries

Boeing has recently warned airlines about the danger of shipping batteries. Ventura Aerospace and its customer FedEx have known about the risks in transporting batteries for years. This is why FedEx chose to work with Ventura Aerospace and Ansul in developing an effective system to deal with the threat of energetic battery fires.

These particular units use EtherCAT expansion chassis for dramatically increasing the I/O capability of the host cRIO Controller. Ventura Aerospace was presented with a unique challenge from a customer. Their current Solid State Relay (SSR) solution for opening and closing a valve was experiencing start up failures. The typical failure mode of an SSR is to fail to the closed position. The problem was that if the SSR failed at start up the connected valve would open out of sequence resulting in possible test article damage.
